TLDRCompare six OpenRouter alternatives on models, billing, fees and credit expiry: Kie.ai, fal.ai, Replicate, Together AI, LiteLLM, Vercel AI Gateway.

OpenRouter gives developers one unified API across many models and modalities: its documentation covers chat, image generation, asynchronous video generation, speech and audio, and its public model list includes video models such as Veo 3.1, Kling and Seedance. So why look elsewhere?

Common reasons to look for an OpenRouter alternative include the fee charged when buying credits, whether unused credits can expire, a model you need that OpenRouter does not list, or a preference for running your own gateway. This guide compares six alternatives on those points, using each platform's own documentation as of October 28, 2026.

How to Choose an OpenRouter Alternative

  • You want a gateway you host and control yourself: look at LiteLLM, which you run with your own provider keys.
  • You want a managed gateway: look at Vercel AI Gateway, which says it charges no markup and no platform fee on tokens.
  • You build with image, video, music or speech models: compare Kie.ai, fal.ai and Replicate, which all offer models across these types.
  • You mainly run open-source models: Together AI focuses on open-source models across text, image, video and voice.

OpenRouter: The Baseline

OpenRouter routes requests to many model providers through one API. Model usage is passed through at the provider's rate, and according to its pricing page, OpenRouter charges a fee when you buy credits; the fee depends on your plan. Bringing your own provider keys is free up to a plan allowance, after which a fee applies. Its FAQ says it reserves the right to expire unused credits one year after purchase.

Kie.ai: Chat, Video, Image and Music Models With One API Key

Kie.ai is an API platform for chat, image, video and music generation, and every model in its market works with the same API key. Among them are models that, as of October 28, 2026, OpenRouter's model list does not include: Suno for music, ElevenLabs for speech and Topaz for image and video upscaling. Without a platform that carries them, using those models would mean opening a separate account with each provider.

Billing is pay-as-you-go with credits and no subscription tiers. Credits never expire, and failed tasks are not charged. On the GPT-6.1 models we checked (GPT-6.1 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol, October 28, 2026), Kie.ai's listed price is below OpenAI's official price; the pricing page shows current prices for every model. New users get free credits to test with.

fal.ai: Generative Media Models

fal describes itself as a full stack for generative media, with image, video, audio, 3D and world models through one API. Its catalog includes music models such as ElevenLabs Music and Stable Audio 2.5, text-to-speech models and Topaz upscalers; chat models in its catalog are routed through OpenRouter. Billing is pay-as-you-go with prepaid credits, and invoicing is available for higher volume. Watch for two details in its FAQ: purchased credits expire 365 days after purchase, and while server errors are never charged, invalid-input errors may be charged if GPU time was already used.

Replicate: Community Models via API

Replicate runs thousands of community-published models through an API, with collections for language models, image, video, music and speech. You buy credit upfront, or some accounts are billed in arrears. For public models you pay for the time the model is active processing your requests; private models are also billed for setup and idle time. Purchased credit is valid for one year and is not refundable.

Together AI: Open-Source Models

Together AI calls itself the AI Native Cloud and focuses on open-source models across text, image, video, code and voice. Most image models are hosted by external providers, and Together passes those requests through at the provider's price. The platform is fully prepaid with a minimum credit purchase, it does not currently offer a free trial, and prepaid credits do not currently expire. US-only inference is billed at a higher rate than standard serverless.

LiteLLM: Self-Hosted Gateway

LiteLLM is an open-source library and self-hosted, OpenAI-compatible gateway for calling many LLM providers in one format. It also passes image, video and speech requests to your own providers. The open-source version is free to self-host, and the enterprise plan is priced annually by gateway capacity, never per token. Your model providers bill you directly, so you manage those accounts and keys yourself.

Vercel AI Gateway: Managed Gateway With No Markup on Tokens

Vercel AI Gateway is a managed gateway you can use from any infrastructure, with text, image, video, speech and music models. It states that it charges no markup and no platform fee on tokens, and its free tier includes a monthly credit. Bring-your-own-key is available on the paid tier with no markup, but note one detail: if a request with your own key fails, the gateway retries it with its own credentials and charges that fallback usage to your credit balance. Some team features, such as a provider allowlist, are paid add-ons.

FAQ

Is there anything better than OpenRouter?

The right OpenRouter alternative depends on what you need. For a self-hosted gateway, look at LiteLLM; for a managed gateway with no markup on tokens, Vercel AI Gateway; for image, video, music and speech models, Kie.ai, fal.ai and Replicate; and for open-source models, Together AI.

Is LiteLLM similar to OpenRouter?

Both give you one interface to many models. The difference is who runs it: OpenRouter is a hosted service you buy credits from, while LiteLLM is open-source, OpenAI-compatible software you host yourself with your own provider keys.

Are there free alternatives to OpenRouter?

LiteLLM's open-source version is free to self-host, though you still pay your model providers. Vercel AI Gateway includes a monthly credit on its free tier, and Kie.ai gives new users free credits for testing. Together AI states that it does not currently offer free trials.

Do OpenRouter credits expire?

OpenRouter's FAQ says it reserves the right to expire unused credits one year after purchase (read October 28, 2026). Kie.ai credits do not expire.

Every platform here has a different strength, so start from the models and billing you need. Prices and model lists change often; check each provider's pricing page before you switch.
